Wanumetonomy’s Emily Brooks is the 2021 Rhode Island Women’s Amateur Champion.
Brooks beat Newport Country Club’s Addy Douglas one up on Friday morning to win the title on her home course.
Brooks entered the match play portion of the tournament as the eight seed, while Douglas entered as the second seed.
Brooks Holds On to Win Title
After being two up early on the front nine, the match was tied through 12 holes after Douglas won the 10th and 12th holes.
Brooks took control of the match by winning three-straight holes, including dropping a lengthy birdie putt on 14 to go two up, and then winning the 15th hole to go three up.
She was three-up with three to go on the Fairfield star.
However, back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 would let Douglas climb right back in, cutting Brooks’ the lead to just one up with one to play.
Something similar happened to Brooks in her second round match against top-seeded Vinny Papa. She went way up and then was forced to hold on.
Fortunately for Brooks, it worked out once again as both her and Douglas parred the 18th hole, giving Brooks the title.
Net Finals
The RI Women’s Net Amateur final is tied through 17 at this time between Nancy O’Neill and Jane Lippincott.
Lippincott won the title on the 19th hole.
