Jon Rahm knocked down two long birdie putts on the final two holes to win the U.S. Open on Sunday afternoon Torrey Pines in California. 

Rahm’s first major victory comes just two weeks after he was forced to withdraw from The Memorial after testing positive for the coronavirus. 

He held a six-shot lead when he had to withdraw. 

While this is Rahm’s first major victory, it is his second win at Torrey Pines after taking the title at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open, which is played at Torrey.

Rahm becomes Spain’s first ever U.S. Open Champion.

Rahm Comes Up Clutch

Trailing by one shot with two holes to play, Rahm drained a big left to right bender on 17 to tie the Louie Oosthuizen for the lead at five under. 

On the par-5 18th hole, Rahm blasted his shot down the middle, but put his second shot in the green side bunker on the right. 

Instead of going right at the hole, Rahm chipped it out above the hole, giving him about a 15 foot birdie putt. 

Then, for the second time in two holes, Rahm drained a huge birdie putt to give him the solo lead for the first time in the tournament. 

On the other side of the coin, Oosthuizen held the lead for the majority of the back nine before Rahm took over at the very end.

Trailing by one shot with a few holes to play, Oosthuizen inexcusably put his tee shot in the hazard on 17 and had to take a drop.

The South African would end up making a bogey on the hole to drop him two shots back with one hole to play.

On the 18th hole, needing an eagle, Oosthuizen put his tee shot in the rough and then layed up short of the green instead of trying to go for it. 

Two straight holes, and two terrible drives cost Louie any chance of winning, or at least tying Rahm. 

On the face of it, not going for the green was an odd decision, however, as the commentators were saying, he might not have had much. 

Oosthuizen did not chip in for eagle on 18. 

It is his sixth runner up in a major, tied with Phil Mickelson.
