Kirkbrae’s McCormick, Lafauci Win RI State Four Ball Championship
Kirkbrae’s Tom McCormick and Larry Lafauci won the Rhode Island State Four Ball Championship on Thursday afternoon at Valley Country Club.
McCormick and Lafauci held off runs from Davis and Brett Chatfield, as well as, Bobby Leopold and Tyler Cooke to win the tournament.
McCormick and Lafauci finished the tournament at 13 under par, propelled by a birdie blitz on the final day.
The two were seven under on Thursday’s round.
Birdie Blitz in Final Round
McCormick and Lafauci started the final round one shot back of two co-leaders, including Leopold and Cook.
However, that deficit was quickly erased.
McCormick, a former RI Amateur champion, birdied two of the first three holes to get team Kirkbrae started.
Lafauci and McCormick then traded birdies on the fourth and fifth holes to get the pair to four-under in the first five holes.
It also gave them the solo lead.
Lafauci dropped birdies on the seventh and ninth holes to get the team to six-under par at the turn.
On the back nine, the two would stay level, with at least one of them always making a par.
However, things got interesting heading into 18 as team Chatfield had made a furious rally, birding four of their last six holes to cut team Kirkbrae’s lead to just one shot.
McCormick would make birdie on 18 to seal the win.
