Rhode Islanders Struggle on Golf’s Longest Day
Golf’s longest day was not good to the handful of Rhode Islanders trying to qualify for the U.S. Open on Monday.
None of them made the cut.
Providence’s Will Dickson, playing in Atlanta finished his sectional qualifier at one-over to miss the cut by ten shots.

Dickson posted a 76 on the first 18 holes and then turned it around on the second 18, shooting a 69. However, that was not enough.
Playing in Purchase, New York, three former URI golf stars all missed the cut.
Chris Francoeur posted ten-over after 36 holes to miss the cut by 13 shots.
Ben Spitz posted four-over and Billy Walthouse posted five over, both missing the cut.
The real challenge of that qualifier was the weather. There were two rain/thunderstorm delays during the day and if it had gone to a playoff, officials were not sure they were going to get it in.
Overall, the entire qualifier took about 12 hours to complete, giving new meaning to Golf’s Longest Day.
