U.S. Wins 3rd Straight Walker Cup
Having to overcome sickness and a good Great Britain/Ireland team, the U.S. clinched its third straight Walker Cup Trophy on Sunday afternoon at Seminole Golf Club in Florida.
As GolfNewsRI reported, both teams were treated for gastrointestinal issues days prior to the prestigious event.
However, at the end of the week, it was the U.S. who won 14-12.
The U.S. is now 38-9-1 in the event that first took place in 1922.
The 2023 Walker Cup is set for the Old Course at St. Andrews.
U.S. Closes it Out
Leading the U.S., star amateurs Austin Eckroat beat Mark Power 7&6 in the opening match of Sunday singles, while Pierceson Coody beat Alex Fitzpatrick 3&1.
Ricky Castillo got another win in the tournament, beating John Murphy 2&1 to become the only player to finish the event with a 4-0 record.
Texas star Cole Hammer knocked out Ben Schmidt 4&3 in the second to last match, while veteran Stewart Hagestad beat Ben Jones 4&2 to basically clinch the cup.
Overall, team USA won five of the ten singles matches to keep the cup.
