Welch Moves Into 10th, #1 Oklahoma in 2nd at Aggie Invitational
Patrick Welch poured in two huge birdies in the last four holes to move into a tie for 10th place at the Aggie Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Texas.
Welch shot an even par 72 on Saturday, moving him to two over for the tournament. He is just two shots out of eighth and four shots out of fourth.
The junior Haskins watch list honoree leads the field with 29 pars over 36 holes, one more than teammate Logan McAllister.
Sooners Rally
Helped by Welch’s success, the Sooners cut a seven stroke deficit to three heading into the final round on Sunday.
Now, just three shot behind Texas.
“Today was just a solid round of golf that gives us an opportunity to go have a chance tomorrow. We know every single shot will matter as we are coming from behind, but this golf course doesn’t give up much, and we’ll need to go earn it tomorrow,” said Head Coach Ryan Hybl after the round.
The Sooners (+2, 2nd) fired the second-lowest round of the day as only Baylor (+9, 4th) was under par in the second round.
No. 5 Texas, who leads Oklahoma by three shots after 36 holes, fired a 4-over 292 at the par-72, 7,227-yard Traditions Golf Club.
Three Sooners sit inside the top 10 and seek to guide Oklahoma to its fourth win of the season in Sunday’s final round.
Oklahoma will tee off with No. 5 Texas and No. 12 Texas A&M at 9:20-10 a.m. on Sunday with the final group featuring Reband, Pierceson Coody (T2, Texas) and leader Sam Bennett (1st, Texas A&M).
