However, despite his struggles, #1 Oklahoma holds a two shot lead over University of Texas with 18 holes left to play. The Sooners are seeking to win their second straight tournament.

“We talk about it all the time, but we really feel like any of our guys can go out and win a tournament any given week. It’s something that is really special to have in a golf program, and we’re fortunate to be in the position we are,” said head coach Ryan Hybl after the day.

Oklahoma was led by Logan McAllister, who shot the seventh-lowest 36 hole score in Oklahoma history at nine-under par.

Overall, the Sooners made 34 birdies and 119 pars to grab the lead.

Welch’s Rounds

Welch was even par through the first eight holes of his first round with two birdies and two bogeys.

However, disaster struck on the ninth hole when Welch made a triple-bogey eight on the par five.

From there, the Classical alum struggled to get it back, making four bogeys on the back nine to shoot seven over par.

In the second 18, Welch played the front nine in one over and the back nine in one over to finish two over for the day.
