Welch Holds Solo Lead After Round 1 of Cabo Collegiate
Providence’s Patrick Welch fired a three-under par 69 to take the outright lead after the first round of the Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio.
There are still two rounds remaining, but, if he wins the individual title, he will receive a PGA Tour exemption into this year’s Valero Texas open, which is set for April.

“Patrick is just playing outstanding golf right now. He made some changes over the winter break on his putting, and when you pair that with his ability to strike the ball, he obviously is a really good player,” said Oklahoma Head Coach Ryan Hybl.
On the team side, #1 Oklahoma leads the tournament by ten shots over #19 Texas A&M.
No. 1 Oklahoma will tee off with second-place No. 19 Texas A&M (2, +9), No. 11 Texas (T3, +10) and No. 3 Florida State (T3, +10) on Tuesday at 9 a.m. off the first hole at TPC San Antonio.
Welch’s Round
Starting on the front nine, the fifth ranked player in the country birdied the second and fifth holes to go to two under right off the jump.
He made the turn at that score.
On the back nine, Welch suffered a bogey on the 12th hole, but quickly got it back.
He dropped in back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15 to get to three-under on the day.
Welch closed with three straight pars to shoot 69.
