Plan to Develop Winnapaug Country Club Delayed Amid Debate

The Westerly Town Council has delayed a decision on a proposal to develop Winnapaug Country Club after heavy debate.

This comes after the principal owners of the club, the Scola Family, proposed to build housing on the property in order to keep the facility open back in October.

As reported by The Westerly Sun, the Scola family is hoping to build “moderately priced” housing for seniors, individuals and families.

The Town Council met on Monday via Zoom to discuss the matter.

That meeting lasted for more than two hours and included public comment, specifically from the Keep Westerly Green Coalition.

No decision was made.

The meeting is scheduled to resume on January 20.

Winnapaug is Westerly’s only public golf course and was designed by Donald Ross.
