Welch Loses Heartbreaker in 2nd Round of Maridoe Am Championship
Rhode Island’s Patrick Welch lost to Preston Summerhays on the final hole in the second round of the Maridoe Amateur Championship on Friday morning in Texas.
The match was all square going into the final hole when Summerhays made three and Welch made a five.
Had Welch won, it would have been a big upset has the former Classical star was seeded 40th, while Summerhays was seeded 8th.
The Match
The second round match started on the 10th hole and saw Welch go one-up right from the start.
He remained one-up until the 13th, when Summerhays tied it, and then snagged the lead on the 14th hole.
Summerhays would make the turn at one up.
Welch would tie the match on the fifth hole, and then re-take a one-up lead on six.
However, Summerhays would get it right back on the next hole and then win it on the final hole.
