Welch Loses, But #1 Oklahoma Advances to East Lake Cup Final
Providence’s Patrick Welch lost 5&4 to Texas star Cole Hammer, but his Oklahoma Sooners rallied to advance to the East Lake Cup final on Tuesday afternoon.
The Sooners will now face Pepperdine in the championship match on Wednesday on Golf Channel.
Oklahoma was down two points to Texas early on, before flipping two matches and then letting Quade Cummins close it out in the anchor match.
Golf Channel’s coverage begins at 11:30 a.m.
A day after winning the individual championship, Welch had a tough day against Hammer.
After the match was all-square after the fifth hole, Hammer won the sixth hole with a four to retake a one-up lead.
He then went two up on 7 and three up on nine.
On the second nine, one in which Welch made four birdies on Monday, he was unable to make a dent in the lead.
Hammer went four up on 12 and five up on 14 to end the match.
This is the second straight year in which Hammer beat Welch in a match.
The two played in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Hammer won 7&5.
