Providence’s Patrick Welch 1 Shot Off Lead At Western Amateur
Providence native and University of Oklahoma golf star Patrick Welch is just one shot off the lead after round one of the Western Amateur at Crooked Stick Golf Club.
Welch fired a three-under par 69 on Tuesday morning and is just one back of five players who sit at four-under.
Welch will tee off at 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
There are two three more qualifying rounds before match play begins on Friday.
The top 16 players make it to match play.
Welch got off to a great start, birding the firs two holes of the tournament to get to two-under right off the jump.
After saving par on four straight holes, Welch bogeyed seven, and made the turn at one under.
The Classical graduate then opened the back nine by making birdies on 10 and 11, getting him to three under for the tournament before some adversity hit.
Welch would make bogey on 12 and then double 14 to fall back to even par.
However, he would recover.
Welch closed the round by birding 16,17 and 18 to finish at three-under par and just one shot back.
