Papa Rolls On, Semifinals of RI Women’s Amateur is Set

Gianna Papa cruised into the semifinals of the Rhode Island Women’s Amateur on Wednesday morning, beating Wannamoisett’s Lisa Ferrara 6&5 at Montaup Country Club.

Papa will now face Kirkbrae’s Kylie Eaton in the semifinals on Thursday, while the other semifinal match features Isabel Southard against Alexis Florio.

Papa Rolls On 

Papa opened the match by winning three of the first four holes to take a three-up lead right off the jump. 

Ferrara got one back on six, but then lost seven, giving Papa a three up lead back as they made the turn. 

After the pair halved ten, Papa won 11, 12 and 13 to close out the match. 

In two matches thus far, Papa has lost a combined three holes, one of which came in the first match after she was already five up. 

Eaton Edges Dohoney 

In the same bracket as Papa, Eaton edged Alpine’s Lauren Dohoney 2&1 to advance. 

The match was tied after ten holes, before Eaton won the 11th hole and then the 13th hole to take a two up lead. 

Dohoney got one back on 15 to cut into the lead, before Eaton closed out the match on 17.  

Southard Advances 

On the other side of the bracket, Pawtucket’s Isabel Southard beat Point Judith’s Melissa Hem 3&2 to get into the final four. 

The match was tied after ten holes before Southard won 11, 12 and 14 to take a three up lead. 

She halved 15 and 16 to close out the match. 

Florio Wins it in Extras 

Alpine’s Alexis Florio was one up on Exeter’s Jillian Blanchard through 14 holes before Blanchard won 15 to tie the match. 

The match remained tied through 16, 17, and 18 sending it to extras. 

On the first playoff hole, Florio made five, while Blanchard made six, giving Florio the win.
