Top-seeded Gianna Papa cruised past Marissa Brown in their first round match of the Rhode Island Women’s Amateur on Tuesday morning at Montaup Country Club.
Papa beat Brown 6&5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
As GolfNewsRI reported, Papa set the course record on Monday with a 67 to clinch the top seed.
Along with Papa, other elite eight matches are set.
Elite matches begin on Wednesday.
With the first tee time on Tuesday, Papa opened the match by winning the first five holes to take a commanding five-up lead.
Brown got one back on the sixth hole, before Papa won the seventh to take a five up lead into the back nine.
Brown won the tenth hole, but it would not be enough.
Papa would win 12 and 13 to close out the match.
