After the first week of the PGA Tour’s return went so smoothly, the Tour now has its third positive coronavirus test in the last two days.
PGA Tour star Brooks Koepka is dropping out of the Travelers Championship after his caddie, Ricky Elliot, tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, according to GolfWeek’s Eamon Lynch.
“I’m going to pull out to protect everybody else. I think it’s the right thing to do. I don’t want to risk anyone’s life if they have respiratory issues or underlying conditions. The only way this Tour can continue is if guys to do this sort of thing and be proactive about it,” Koepka told GolfWeek.
According to GolfWeek, Elliott tested negative 48 hours earlier when he arrived at the tournament.
Koepka said that he is deciding on whether to fly home or quarantine in Hartford. His girlfriend, Jena Sims, and personal chef are both being tested again on Wednesday.
Brooks Koepka dropping out of the tournament is extra sad as his brother, Chase Koepka, Monday qualified for the event.
Positive Tests Piling Up
This is the fourth positive test on the PGA Tour since the restart, and the third one just this week after Cameron Champ and Graeme McDowell’s caddie tested positive on Tuesday.
To clarify, McDowell’s caddie was not on site at the Travelers Championship, he was aleady quarantining in Orlando, according to GolfWeek.
The PGA Tour’s first positive test came last week at the RBC Heritage when Nick Watney fell victim to coronavirus.
