Swansea Country Club’s Joseph Downing won the Rhode Island amateur qualifying event at Green Valley Country Club on Wednesday.
Downing fired a two under par 69 to win by three shots Over Metacomet’s Brad Broome.
After closing the front nine at one-under, Downing played the first five holes on the back nine at even with a birdie on 13 and a bogey on 14.
However, the entire tournament changed when Downing eagled the 15th hole to push his core to three-under.
He closed with a bogey on 17 and a par on 18 to shoot a two-under par 69.
The top 20 players, including ties, qualified for the RI Amateur.
The cut was seven over.
The final qualifying event is set for Monday at Fenner Hill.
Hole In One Alert
As GolfNewsRI reported, Warwick Country Club’s Brad Auclair aced the 12th hole during the qualifying round.
The 12th hole at Green Valley is a 125 yard par three in which Auclairhit a pitching wedge.
The hole in one is the third of Auclair’s career.
Auclair finished the day at three-over par and is well inside the top 20, putting him in the RI Amateur Championship.
