URI’s Luke Stennett Wins Rutherford Intercollegiate

URI freshman Luke Stennett won the Rutherford Intercollegiate on Sunday at State College in Pennsylvania.

Stennett finished six-under for the tournament to win by two shots over Longwood’s Justin LaRue.

“Luke was in total control the entire time. He won without making a birdie on any of the days on the easiest hole on the golf course and missed four very short putts. He dominated the field,” said URI Head Coach Gregg Burke after the round.

This is Stennett’s first individual win of his collegiate career.

Over the next four holes, Stennett carded three pars and one bogey, while Singh Bhatia bogeyed both 14 and 16 to give Stennett a one-shot lead heading to the final hole.

Stennett would birdie the 18th hole to seal the win.

Rhody Takes 4th

As a team, the Rams finished in fourth place overall in the tournament with a team score of 12-over par.

Behind Stennett, sophomore Josiah Tong finished in a tie for 20th place, while fellow freshman Tyler Bruneau finished in a tie for 28th place.

Sean Magarian finished in a tie for 32nd while Aiden O’Donovan took 45th place.

“It was a ‘failure to accomplish’ tournament for us, especially since we were 10-under after the first nine holes. But even with that said, I have faith on the character of our guys to work hard this week in preparation for the A10 Championship,” said Burke.

The Rams now get set for the A-10 Championships starting on Tuesday, April 22 down in Florida.
