Misquamicut’s Brendan Lemp won the Rhode Island Mid-Amateur on his home course on Wednesday afternoon at the Misquamicut Club.

Lemp, who held the overnight lead, held on to beat John Hayes IV by one shot to claim the title.

“It’s very cool. Today was very stressful but it was a lot of fun, just battling out there. John made a really big push in the end, I think he made four birdies in a row and we were tied with three to go. Made it interesting,” Lemp told RIGA after the round.

Hayes made a final round charge at Lemp with a closing score of 64, while Lemp finished with a 69.

Hayes actually tied Lemp for a short time, but Lemp drained about a 40 foot birdie putt from off the green on the 17th hole to regain the lead.

“That was really cool. I knew I had to do something and going into 18 with it playing 230, I knew that probably wasn’t going to be a good chance so I guess 35-40 feet was my best chance,” added Lemp.

He closed it out with a par on 18 to seal the victory.

Lemp and Hayes were the only two players under par in the tournament – including the Seniors.

Zach Kovat finished third, Brad Valois took fourth and Mike Hamilton, Jon Pannone, Nate Winsor, John Drohen and Chris Congdon finished in a tie for fifth.
