The state ranked 34th in last year’s rankings.
RI ranks directly behind California, South Dakota and Oregon, whose average handicap index is 17.1 and 17. 2 respectively.

The Ocean State ranks ahead of Connecticut and Colorado, who have an average handicap index of 17.6 and 17.7 respectively.
Breaking it down further, Rhode Island has the second best handicap index in New England behind only Massachusetts, who ranks 31st with an index of 16.8.
Mississippi has the best handicap index in the U.S. at 11.6.
It should be noted that this data only takes into account golfers who use the USGA app, there are obviously other handicap methods/apps that are not accounted for.
One year ago, GolfNewsRI conducted a handicap survey completed by more than 230 golfers in RI and the region.
