Kirkbrae’s Larry Lafauci Jr. Wins RI Mid-Am in Playoff

Kirkbrae’s Larry Lafauci Jr. beat childhood friend Tom McCormick and Button Hole’s Chris Flowers in a playoff to win the Rhode Island Mid-Amateur on Thursday afternoon at Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence.

All three players were tied at two-under after regulation, before Lafauci Jr. won with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

Lafauci Jr. and McCormick won the RI Four-Ball Championship together last season and both grew up playing at Triggs.

The Final Round

After firing an open round 73, Lafauci started the final round several shots back of leader Austin Cilley.

He still was off the lead after a opening nine 36, which was saved by an eagle on the sixth hole.

However, on the back side, he lit it up.

Lafauci made birdie on the 10th hole, dropped another birdie on the 13th hole and then closed the tournament with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes.

He then had to wait.

McCormick birdied the 15th hole to get to two-under par and then Flowers made birdie on the final hole to pull into a tie for the lead.

That forced a three-hole playoff, which Lafauci won on the first hole.

Senior Divison

The senior division was won by former EJ Wholey, who finished one-over par for the tournament.

He edged Darren Corrente and John Auclair by one shot.
