Chatfield in 39th, Welch 60th After Round 1 of Jones Cup

The first round of the Jones Cup Invitational was a bit of a struggle for Davis Chatfield and Patrick Welch. 

Chatfield finished the round with a two-over 74 and is in a tie for 39th. 

Meanwhile, Welch posted a five-over 77 to finish the day in a tie for 60th.

Notre Dame’s Palmer Jackson leads the tournament with a 6-under 66.

Chatfield’s 1st Round 

Chatfield got off to a good start with a birdie on the first hole to get to one under right off the bat. 

After pars on the next four holes, the former RI Amateur champ bogeyed the sixth hole and double the seventh. 

He closed with a birdie on eight to turn at 38. 

On the backside, Chatfield bogeyed the tenth hole, before making back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes. 

He bogeyed 13, birdied 14 and then closed with a bogey on 18 to post 74. 

Welch’s 1st Round 

Starting on the back nine, Welch went bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie on the first four holes before doubling the 15th hole to turn at 38. 

Making the turn, Welch birdied the first and fifth holes, but gave it right back with bogeys on the sixth and seventh holes. 

He closed the round with a double goes on the ninth hole to shoot 77.
