Providence’s Welch Fires 1-Under 71 in 1st Round of U.S. Amateur

Providence native and University of Oklahoma golf star Patrick Welch fired a one under par 71 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur on Monday at Banden Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon.

Welch is currently tied for 33rd after the first round and will need another low round on Tuesday to make it to match play.

The top 64 players make the cut into Wednesday’s match play, but the standings are so close right now that it will take a big round tomorrow.

Welch’s First Round

Welch bogeyed the second and seventh holes of the round to drop to two over.

However, his round changed on the eighth hole.

Starting on eight, Welch birdied three straight holes to drop to one under on the day.

Welch would save par on the final eight holes to finish at one-under par for the day.
