BREAKING: Lukowicz Knocks Off O’Leary to Win RI Amateur

Agawam Hunt’s Jamie Lukowicz is the new RI Amateur champion.

Lukowicz took down defending champion Andrew O’Leary to win his first title on Saturday afternoon at Pawtucket Country Club.

For O’Leary, he loses out on a chance to make history.

He would have been the 13th player to win back-to-back Amateur titles, and the first since 2001 to win the RI Amateur on his home course.

O’Leary looked nearly unbeatable through the first three and a half days of the tournament, but looked a little shaky in his final three matches, managing to grind out wins in two of them.

Lukowicz will now look to defend the title next year at Kirkbrae Country Club.

Lukowicz Wins It

After being two up through the first 18, Lukowicz put his drive in the trees on the first hole of the second 18 and didn’t have much of a shot.

O’Leary would win that hole to cut into the lead.

However, on the second hole, O’Leary would return the favor by putting his tee shot out of bounds and making a six, giving Lukowicz the two shot lead back.

This seemingly happened most of the day.

O’Leary would cut into the lead and then either give it back on the next hole or Lukowicz would have an answer.

Another example is when O’Leary won the fourth hole to again cut it to one down, but Lukowitz wold respond with a birdie on the next hole to get the two shot lead back.

After the pair halved the sixth hole, Lukowicz hit the shot of the day on the par three seventh, sticking it right next to the pin for what amounted to be a tap in birdie. O’Leary missed a long birdie putt.

Lukowicz was now three up.

Still three down, O’Leary won the 14th hole to cut the lead to two down, and then get as close as one down with two holes to go.

However, as he did all day, Lukowicz responded with a win on 17 to end the match.
