U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Stricker to Make Six Captain’s Picks

The PGA of America announced that U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Steve Stricker will now have six captain’s picks for the 2020 Ryder Cup as opposed to four from previous years.

The announcement came the night before the PGA Tour’s return to action at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Revised Selection Criteria

With the changes to the schedule, including three majors being pushed back and another being canceled, the U.S. points system will now run through the BMW Championship on August 30.

After that tournament, the top six automatically earn a spot on the team, assuming that “all such events and the 2020 Ryder Cup take place as currently scheduled,” said the PGA in its announcement.

Stricker would then fill out the rest of the team on either September 2 or September 3.

That means, that only one major (the PGA) and two World Golf Championships will be included in the points.

Ryder Cup Uncertain

While the PGA is proceeding as planned with the tournament, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Ryder Cup.

According to Stricker, a final decision on the tournament will be announced in a few weeks.

Another aspect of the Ryder Cup is the fans.

Players, including Brooks Koepka an Rory McIlroy, said that they would rather not play the tournament without fans.

It is unknown what the fans status will be come September.
