The 16th annual Rhode Island Senior Open Championship has been canceled due to the threat of the spread of coronavirus.

“I have run this event for 15 yrs and with everything else being cancelled, I can’t invite Pro’s from around the country, it’s not safe for them,” said golf professional Rick Holcomb, who runs the tournament.

According to Holcomb, a GolfNewsRI contributor, the tournament did not have a set date or venue yet due to the uncertainty of the virus.

The RI Senior Open Championship is canceled.

The tournament began in 2005 when Massachusetts’ Skip Guss edged the field.

Last year’s tournament was won by Jim Becker and Jerry Courville were named co-champions after the second round was rained out.

The tournament record for the 2 rounds was Rick Karbowski’s 10 under par 134 at Valley CC in 2013.
