National Golf Foundation Projects 90% of Courses Open by May 17

The National Golf Foundation (NGF) is projecting that 90% of U.S. golf courses will be open for business by May 17.

The latest projection comes as New Hampshire is expected to open for play on May 11.

“Over a 10-day period leading up to the first weekend in May, eight states – Illinois, Maine, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — cleared golf courses to re-open after previously restricting play. That’s more than 3,500 courses, a total that doesn’t include recent reopenings in New York, California and Hawaii, which had significant local restrictions in place that have eased and continue to be lifted. It also doesn’t include Washington, which got the go-ahead to open its approximately 275 courses on May 5,” writes NGF.

Just a month ago , only 48% of courses were open for play.

90% of golf courses are projected to be open in the U.S.

Will MA be Open?

The question here in New England is will Massachusetts be open?

As GolfNewsRI has reported, Massachusetts is one of only three states in the entire country that are disallowing golf at the moment.

Earlier this week, Massachusetts golf executives met with Governor Charlie Baker’s re-opening advisory board to discuss potential plans for the re-opening.

AMGO released the following statement on Sunday:

“A team of AMGO representatives made up of industry leaders, Jesse Menachem (Mass Golf), Mike Higgins (NEPGA), Jennifer O’Connor (NEGCOA member, Nick Marrone (NEGCOA Member), and Don Hearn (GCSANE) had a productive meeting with the Governor’s re-opening advisory board yesterday morning. We hope to hear soon that golf can resume in the Commonwealth under the established guidelines presented. We appreciate the work being done by the advisory board and we look forward to working with them to keep the golf community safe. Updates will be provided as they are made available to us.”
