Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza announced that as of Wednesday, April 8, all Providence golf courses will be closed in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus.
Elorza also announced the closure of parks, fields, courts, green spaces and trails in the city. Those closures go into effect on Tuesday, April 7.
“I know this is very difficult for our city. I’ve become very, very concerned and very, very upset at the pictures that I’ve seen on social media, the calls we have received about people who are indeed gathering at our parks and aren’t abiding by the social distance guidelines that we’ve been urging the past couple weeks,” said Elorza in a Zoom call with the media on Tuesday.
The closures will last until at least May 1.
Elorza added that police would be enforcing the closures by asking people to disperse.
Governor Gina Raimondo has yet to close golf courses across the state.
